EVERYDAY STATISTICS

Pre-Literate

It is here that I begin to explore how you actually do statistics all the time but are not aware of it.

You can explore how I discuss the idea that all day you experience aspects of taking measurements and evaluating quantitative information that bombards you. In addition, you actually perform experiments over and over but very rarely do anything to either identify them or evaluate them. Below I introduce some ideas which you can look into

A Day in MY Life - Or yours - A valuable way to start on the journey
Perhaps the best way to begin to understand how statistics is important to your everyday life is to follow me over the course of a day. Beginning with the time that the alarm goes off in the morning to the end of the day we all actually encounter a wide range of activities which do have statistical aspects of which we are quite unaware. It is here that I try to begin to engage you in an exercise of sensing how you might find this concept valuable.

Some Simple Examples
  • Experiments you conduct
  •  Need for a baseline
  •  Obsession with a single number
  •  Need for a baseline – 98.6
  •  Batch processing
  •  Weighing myself

Statistics BEGINS with MEASUREMENT

This will be a theme throughout.
Become An Educated Consumer of Data
Think about the following:
  • How well do you interpret tables and graphs, especially over time
  • Look at all that data in the news
  • Ask Questions - what might be wrong with the information you are given all the time
